Helen marrying Peter, Jo and the black boy. as yet they all have to pay for this pleasure. Jo gets pregnant andthe black boy leaves. Helen leaves Jo for peter and when this doesntwork out Helen comes back to Jo.In the play Jo is subject to neglect. This is because her mother,Helen, leaves her alone at 15 to fend for herself.Ill be seeing you. Hey If he doesnt show up Ill be back This isthe start of the period when Helen leaves Jo. At this stage in theplay the readers dont know if Jo will survive for long without Helen.Peter however se this and gives Jo a pound to have so she could buy nourishment to eat.Jos role in the play is to show what it would be like in those timesto be a single expectant mother. She also has the train of showingus how parents have influences on their children for example Jo wascreated after Helen and Jos dad had a one-night stand.I didnt do it on purpose. How was I hypothetical to know that youdmaterialize out of a little love affair that lasted 5 minutes? thisshows that Jo was a mistake and that Helen was an unmarried mother.However no matter how hard she tried Jo made that same mistake asHelen.In the 1950s and 1960s Jo would be called illegitimate because Helenwasnt married when Jo was conceived. However in todays times Jowould not be called illegitimate because there are lots of people whohave children before they get married. Helen doesnt treat Jo with alot of respect, as she doesnt often tell however she is going. Shealso doesnt support Jo when she needs her the most. Jo in this time remaining school at 15 because she didnt have a full education so shewouldnt have been able to get a aright paid job. This is typical ofa kitchen sink drama because in those dramas they were all about real
